"What time is it?" Alessa sighed as she leaned herself against the wall of the tunnel. It must have been hours since she started the repairs to the network in this blasted dark place.
"Time for you to get a watch." Her current companion remarked as he marked wires for her. He couldn't have been any older than twenty, tosseled brown hair and dark green eyes. His skin was fairly pale, but they were all getting that way due to the lack of sunlight. Alessa had hand picked him a lot of times for assistance. It made him feel proud that one of their best mechanics wanted him to help.
"Oh shut up Raz. I'm serious."
"Heh heh, it's like 9 oclock why?"
"Ugh...I've been here all night." Alessa ran her fingers through her hair, pulling it back from her face for a few moments. Blasted hair never wanted to obey her, maybe she should grow it out so she could at least tie it back. "I probably should head home."
"What? The great Al giving up?"
"Pft, it'll still be here in a few hours. Leave me alone." As much as she loved to problem solve and fix things for their community, it was starting to wear on her nerves. Alessa had seen herself become far more than this. She had also hoped that her life would have turned out a lot differently. It seemed that the older she was getting the more she wished things would have turned out differently. Maybe her mother was right...
"Come on, you too kid. We'll get a few hours of sleep and tackle this again." She smiled to Raz and pushed herself away from the tunnel's wall finally.
Raz watched as Alessa stretched before him. She was beautiful, especially with those grease and dirt smudges along her face. Had he been a bolder man or she been younger he probably would have admitted how he felt about her. But then again there was Katan too. All the good ones were taken. "So uhm, you want to grab some breakfast first?"
The female mechanic smirked a little to the invite until it faded suddenly. What was that noise? Lowering her arms from her stretch she looked around to let her ears take in the noises about them.
"What's wrong?"
"Shhh..." Alessa rose her hand to hush the boy as she listened. It wasn't unheard of for tunnels to collapse. As much as they'd try to support them properly...sometimes they just gave out. And that was what she was afraid of...
Meanwhile, Katan was sitting at his desk. It had been years since they had been stuck down here and it was starting to get to him. It wasn't the fact that they were underground that bothered him, it was the fact that they were prisoners. Free from OZ control, but he could only see them as glorified prisoners, hiding underground to avoid persecution.
His mind had wandered until the voice of the emergency radio caught his attention.
"All emergency personel to tunnel 339; cave in. Proceed with caution."
The message repeated a few times as his eyes wandered to the note Alessa had left him. He knew she must have lost track of time when she hadn't come home last night. Though as his eyes went to that note, to read it again, he felt a sudden pain in his heart. "No.." Pushing himself from the chair he ran towards the door.
Tunnel 339 wasn't that close, and by the time he got there the access tunnel to the smaller tunnel was surrounded by people. Katan shoved his way through the crowd, until he was stopped by one of the emergency personel right infront of the tunnel.
"You can't go in there."
"Let me in! Alessa's in there."
"I'm sorry sir, we'll find her. Now please stand back."
Katan's hand clenched tightly into a fist as he looked away. These men were professionals, and were appointed to their jobs for good reason. But he couldn't just stand here and wait for them to find her. No, time was precious. Forcing his way past the man he moved down the tunnel and ignored the other men as he started to toss rubble behind him. Come on Alessa, we've been through too much for this to happen now.
"What'cha lookin' for?"
Katan froze at the sound of that voice. Was it really? Turning his head his eyes widened slightly as he saw her. Alessa stood right behind him with that smirk of hers. Damned woman. "Nothing now." He grumbled a little to himself as he rose up to his feet and looked her over. Besides a scratch here and there she seemed fine.
"Aww were you worried about me?" Alessa still had that smirk on her lips as she watched how flustered he was. He was so cute sometimes.
"Tch, you can take care of yourself." Katan folded his arms across his chest as he repeated her usual line that she would give him.
"That's right." She gave him a short nod in agreement before her hand came forward to be placed against his cheek. "But...it's nice to know you care." That smirk changed into a smile as she leaned in and kissed him.
